What's your special interest?

I've noticed there a lot of posts on this forum about making friends and finding others who share an interest, so I thought I'd start a thread where people could talk about the stuff that really interests them and maybe connect with others who feel the same about that topic. I hope that's okay, and I'm sorry if a thread like this already exists and I missed it.

I know I have several interests which I get VERY excited about and would love to find others to geek out with on - as it can feel really lonely to not have people who share the same passion or get excited about the same things. But I also love listening to people talk about things that they're really passionate about too, so I would genuinely love to hear about everyone special interests too.

I find it really hard to make friends and am always cautious about talking about the things that really interest me, after years of being told that I'm weird/creepy/boring for getting obsessed with stuff that I like. But that's just me, and if I get passionate about something then I can't help but  focus on it. And that makes sense to me. Why wouldn't someone focus on something that makes them happy?

  • My special interests in the broadest terms are biology and certain topics and disciplines pertaining to the visual arts. To be more specific, I really love entomology (the study of insects), with a particular fascination with insects and other arthropods such as beetles. I love reading books and papers on entomological subjects and watching documentaries on them as well. I also like marine biology and cell biology; a particular topic of the latter that excites me is biological cloning, including subjects like Dolly the sheep and the experiments on salamander eggs by Hans Spemann.

Also in terms of my interest in art, I really love drawing and I also enjoy things like illustration, cartoons and graphic novels. I draw a lot of the things that I have special interests in, so a lot of animals such as insects and also other animals and organisms that interest me.

  • Entomology is a pretty unusual interest. What got you interested in that? Was it something you studied for a qualification?

I love drawing too. What type of mediums do you like to draw in? Is illustration and graphic novels something you create too?

  • I've always loved animals for as long as I can remember, and I always loved insects and other creatures found in my garden. I enjoyed catching them in jars or containers and observing them when I was a child. I'm hoping to possibly study entomology in the future at a university.

As for drawing, I like using pen and ink, mostly. What about you? I like to make illustrations and also little comics from time to time. Mainly comics about characters I've created.

  • That's really cool, I'd love to see your stuff.

  • That sounds cool, I used to want to be in animation myself back in the day. I post some of the comics on the internet on occasion, but I'm hoping I can get something physically published eventually. Indeed, a graphic novel is a big task, but I'm hoping someday I'll have the ability to tackle it.

  • I like pencil or fine liner pen. I also use a lot of sketches as a basis for digital art. I studied animation, so I got used to doing art on a computer in one form or another. My style tends to  very illustrative and whimsical.

Your comics sound great. Do you publish them? I used to follow lots of web comics artist on Twitter (until I gave up Twitter, that is). I've always loved the idea of creating a graphic novel but its quite a skill set all its own.
