What's your special interest?

I've noticed there a lot of posts on this forum about making friends and finding others who share an interest, so I thought I'd start a thread where people could talk about the stuff that really interests them and maybe connect with others who feel the same about that topic. I hope that's okay, and I'm sorry if a thread like this already exists and I missed it.

I know I have several interests which I get VERY excited about and would love to find others to geek out with on - as it can feel really lonely to not have people who share the same passion or get excited about the same things. But I also love listening to people talk about things that they're really passionate about too, so I would genuinely love to hear about everyone special interests too.

I find it really hard to make friends and am always cautious about talking about the things that really interest me, after years of being told that I'm weird/creepy/boring for getting obsessed with stuff that I like. But that's just me, and if I get passionate about something then I can't help but  focus on it. And that makes sense to me. Why wouldn't someone focus on something that makes them happy?

  • My special interests in the broadest terms are biology and certain topics and disciplines pertaining to the visual arts. To be more specific, I really love entomology (the study of insects), with a particular fascination with insects and other arthropods such as beetles. I love reading books and papers on entomological subjects and watching documentaries on them as well. I also like marine biology and cell biology; a particular topic of the latter that excites me is biological cloning, including subjects like Dolly the sheep and the experiments on salamander eggs by Hans Spemann.

Also in terms of my interest in art, I really love drawing and I also enjoy things like illustration, cartoons and graphic novels. I draw a lot of the things that I have special interests in, so a lot of animals such as insects and also other animals and organisms that interest me.

  • (Sorry, I'm trying to respond to my comment but can't seem to up there). Yeah, I did that one on chalk with black card. My friend Rosie (who's doing art at London Met liked that one too) I prefer to work in pencil and am trying to work on the proportions. I wouldn't say that's my best stuff though. i think the Michael Palin would be close but I also need to photograph it better. My brother is an architect and my uncle was an illustrator so it's probably genetic.

  • I like working in pencil too or fine liner pen. I find drawing in white on coloured paper really hard. I love the look of chalk but I can't stand the dusty sensation of chalk or soft pastels on my fingers, so if I want to try that look I either need to use light coloured pencils or oil pastels. Proportion is tricky, do you grid up or do you do it by eye?

  • I mostly do it by eye. I don't know why, but I often think of grids as cheating a bit. I did one of my grandmother and another of my grandfather (he died of covid, she died 2 years ago) and showed it to them at the cemetery the other day. I'm working on a very old photo of me at the moment and I'm using my phone to zoom into bits. I certainly don't like the sound of chalk scraping but I do like fine liner. There's an artist local to me named Greg Gilbert (he was in a 90s band too) he does some amazing pencil and fine liner work.
