Is suicide a personal choice of an inevitable result of mental pain// distress

I am trying to understand the responses I've had about this as I see there are 2 differing opinions on this; some say that it is a personal choice and blame the person for making a bad choice,, others say that it's inevitable for some if pushed into a distressing, hopeless situation.

I feel that personal knowledge of a close friend or relative lost to suicide, would favour the latter opinion. What do you think?

As ASD people we don't easily let sleeping dogs lie and that is why I feel we can get obsessed with worrying about this.

Any comments, informed or not??

  • This is not personal - I could replace  'you' with 'a person'.

It's always a personal decision - how you process whatever stimulus is down to you - no-one else has access to your mind or understands how you process things..   Some things bother some people but not others so it's a purely internal process.    Trying to blame others for how your brain works is not fair.

  • Well I certainly believe it's not a personal decision and I didn't realise how many thought otherwise. My personal view is that everyone will suicide if their life becomes sufficiently painful, distressing, hopeless, prolonged, burden on others .

Interesting that you view your opinion as THE ONLY CORRECT one (so far).

    See what others say.............

  • It depends on the person doesn't it? For an autistic person opportunities are very far and inbetween. Many autistic people are denied social intervention that is need for them to become independent or seek support or help.

Being not only people but animals we fundamentally need basic thing such as safe shelter, Food, Water and warmth if you are not able to gain these resources yourself you would experience hardship and unpredictability that a person on the autism spectrum fundamentally struggle with.i think anyone in a position where they can't provide the basic despite trying their hardest would be pushed to that mind set. It caused by environmental and social circumstance.

i agree with both you and plastic's viewpoints it a choice you make and it is usually the last resort when a person has no energy to keep trying or no prospect of things changing to improve the situation they are in.

When someone has no Energy to keep going because they are in physical pain that is not a choice someone makes more of natural instinct to stop the suffering.

If someone does not see a wayout or prospect of improving their situations and have the ability and the energy still to keep going and comes to the conclusion of ending their life there is a choice thier. That choice is sometimes influence by mental health conditions but fundamentally it choice to get better or die.
