Can aspergers get worse? 6 year old

Hi all, we are currently trying to get a diagnosis for Aspergers for our 6 year old daughter.  Thing is over the last few weeks we have noticed her behaviour has got a lot worse.  For example today she was singing in the choir at church and she was dancing through the whole song (she wasn't meant to be), she was also kneeling up and looking all around during the service (she does get distracted but not usually this bad)  Lastly when they gave her the christingle she got very anxious and so the teacher had to blow the candle out (she has been to this service several times and never had a problem with the candles before).  Generally she has been much more distracted and a lot harder to get her to listen.  Her teachers have also noticed the worsening of behaviour so its not just me picking up on it more.

Basically I am just wondering if she is gonna deteriorate and get worse or could it just be down to the tiredness and excitement of Christmas (although I never remember her being this bad before?)

I am kind of new to this and am very worried so anyone who could help or give some words of advice I would be very grateful.

  • The associated behaviours of Asperger's will vary depending on the circumstances, it does not matter if your daughter has done things before, because she is growing and changing, so each time the event will be different for her. If se has Asperger's she is like an alien in the NT world, not able to undertsand any of the NT rules you take for granted.

    Also, she is young, the full effect of Asperger's on an individual will not be apparent until they are older. At ages 8-10 years her peers will develop away from her (if she has Asperger's), they will get better at that unspoken social communication, and at coping with day-to-day activities and she will be using conscious strategies to get the same results wich ends up in exhaustion.

    How her behaviour is affected will depend on how the symptoms of Asperger's affect her in particular. Read Tony Attwood's book The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome to get a sense of the very different behaviours and effects Asperger's has on individuals.

    Also, any ASD is developmental and lifelong, so it is not a static condition and the behavious will very definitely change over time, but will never go away. Asperger's is a whole different experience from the NT world.
