Isolated

Hello,

I'm new here but I read a bunch of threads for a few hours earlier and decided maybe I can ask here how to meet people and make friends?

I can make online friends easily but my partner is more autistic and seems to severely struggle, dropping people often as she doesn't like them etc and feels very lonely.

We are trying to meet people in real life as we are tired of online talks only and want real company. How do you meet people? I find myself too shy to talk in public or in the shops etc, she has only ever had 3 friends before and I'm not sure how to help her make new ones. We are both pretty depressed and isolated despite living in a student city.

  • Hi - I've mentioned this many times before but have you looked at Meetup.com?       It's a website where people create social groups and invite people to come along for events.

Obviously, it's a bit dead right now due to covid - but there;s normally people organising pub evenings, meals out, coffee meets, walking / exercise clubs, partners for sports - and a lot of people promoting their businesses for a lot of alternative therapies.

It works by a group 'owner' creating the group and inviting others along to their events - the owners have to pay a fee to own their group so some will ask for a small donation towards their costs every now & then - normally voluntarily - others just absorb the cost themselves so it's free.

There's no commitment - you can just go along and see how it 'feels' to find a group of people that you 'click' with.

I recommend trying the 'free' ones first like pub meets - you're not stuck there if you don't like it.

I've been doing it for about 5 years - I organise pub nights, meals out, picnics etc. and there's a regular bunch of people that go come along.

You have to remember that they are all in the same position as you - wanting to get out and meet new people so there's normally a good atmosphere.

    Good luck.

  • Thank you for the suggestion, I will give it a try, as I'm in the swansea area I've been looking around for things like that and did see the website and even yourself reccommending it.

I will give it a look, as we are going crazy from isolation if I'm honest.
