Re Housing?

Hi,  this is my first post here.  A little background first:

I'm in my late thirties, have always had terrible trouble with certain things and have had major periods of anxiety and stress when things go wrong.  I was always just diagnosed with Generalised Anxiety Disorder but after having one too many meltdowns at work,  my boss decided I really needed to get extra help.  When this wasn't forthcoming from my GP,  my work got me a private consultation with a consultant psychiatrist.  After a lengthy 2 and a half hour session with him,  he advised that he had been performing some tests while we were talking and gave me a diagnosis of high functioning ASD.  This was a complete surprise to me at the time but after taking his advice of getting to know more about the condition,  it appears that I can only agree with his diagnosis, however much I didn't want it to be true.

Now,  I live in social housing currently due to a period of extreme difficulties a few years ago.  I initially wanted to try and move on from here but it's just not been possible.  I have very bad debt and credit problems and get paid minimum wage so where I live, private renting is just not possible for me.  I also feel like the stability of having a social landlord to be helpful with my anxiety issues as I've had problems in the past with private landlords (selling up with not much notice, entering my flat without permission etc).  The trouble is,  I live in a very rough part of town and have had consistent issues with a couple of neighbours with noise.  I've complained to the landlord consistently but they have handled it really badly over the 5 years I have been here.  This has then resulted in maing the problem much worse.  I have now given up on any positive action being taken in my current location.  I really want the housing association to re house me but as a single man  this would not happen for a very very long time and I may be swapping one problem flat for another, especially if i swap with another tenant.

I really don't want to play up on the fact that I have Asperger Syndrome as I'm usually a very independent and proud person but would I be able to approach my housing association with this information to see if I could get in to a quieter block/house?  Is this something that they would even take in to consideration?  I know that they have blocks of flats for people over 40 (I will be 40 very soon) and blocks for people who are in work only.  I just can't keep on having meltdowns because my neighbours are noisy at all hours, very abusive and threatening and I just don't feel safe here since the complaint went wrong.

Sorry for the essay but I'm really at my wits end with all of this and just don't know what to do anymore.

Parents
  • It still classed as a special need and they legally have to take your needs into account. Ask the person who gave you the diagnosis if they can give you a letter confirming the diagnosis then find out what the email address is for your housings accessibility/disability section or officer and email sending them a copy of the letter(take a photo of it on a phone or iPad then attach it to the email as proof you have a diagnosis).

Are the 'meltdowns' you had at work related to sound and/or confrontations with other employees?  Maybe your employer could send them an email about this or just conform its true if you mention it in your email.

You could point out that you're nearly 40 and ask if you could at least be considered for the waiting list for those flats or the 'workers only' flat.  Can you visit them both first? (just go look at them from the outside, see where they are what kind of people are going in and out of them).

The over 40's may offer more security (once you're over 40, you'll always be over 40!) cos what happens if there's another covid wave, meaning more employers have to furlough workers again or let them go if the business has to close? Do you lose those flats if you lose your job? Can you get one if you work from home?

    Worth looking into it.

  • Yes,  the problems I have had at work have been mainly noise related,  other sensory issues also (people cooking smelly food etc).  My boss is fully aware of my diagnosis and is fully aware of the issues I have with my neighbour so would certainly be able to offer input on that.
