What would you have wanted people to know/understand as you were growing up?

Hi.... I want to develop a range of talks for parents, friends, family and professionals and I am wondering what everyone thinks are the most important topics to address... so far I am thinking:

  • Sensory processing
  • Mental Health
  • Emotions and empathy
  • Shut downs and meltdowns

My intention is to help dispel some of the myths around autism and promote understanding and acceptance.

If you have any more ideas of topics I would really interested....

Parents
  • In my case, being wrongly diagnosed with an eating disorder was a blight on my life. I was placed in a therapy group with other people with eating disorders, learned and copied all their behaviour and ended up worse. I was only picky and obsessed with control over my food, but I ended up self harming and worse.

  • Sorry to here this.... Unfortunately it is all too common. I will bring this fact into the talk on metal health with a focused section on mis-diagnosis. There is now the categorisation of restrictive and avoidant food disorder rather that anorexia and bulimea which I think (as far as categories goes) is a step in the right direction. Bi-polar and personality disorder being two other areas to be discussed.
