Diagnosed then forgotten

I was diagnosed 4 years ago at age of 26. I was tested and diagnosed then that was it goodbye and no help offered whats so ever to cope from the nhs. There seems to be no one who specialises in autism and ptsd  therapy work in the nhs. I cant work a job and hardly leave my house and dont feel like im living. I struggle to communicate my needs and just feel like ive been forgotten.

Is it common to be diagnosed by nhs  then just given no help?

  • I think that seems to be the case from what I've seen. If you are lucky enough to have an Adult ASD unit, they seem to only offer diagnosis, they don't offer any real support.

So that's it for treatment, unless you have a comorbid mental health disorder. I'm currently in a treatment program, but the only reason I'm even in it in the first place, is because I was misdiagnosed with a mental health problem first, and they have allowed me to stay in it for a little bit, but as soon as they realised I'm autistic they started slowly tapering it off to discharge me.

  • There is specialist provision within the NHS but you have to fight for it. Talk to you GP about how difficult things are for you and all for a referral.  You'll probably have to fight fort it and then wait for ages once you are referred.

The NHS does just discharge you post diagnosis but can provide support, eventually.

Maybe check with your GP (General Practitioner) about the following information about Post Traumatic Shock Disorder (PTSD):

As there may be something available from the post code lottery in your area, and perhaps also check to see if your support needs can be met by way of a Social Worker or Occupational Therapist via referral from your GP, or more directly via your local County Council.
