Aspergers & Grief/New job

Hi I'm New to the site, not diagnosed but thinking about starting the process. However, 3 months ago my Dad passed away from Bowel Cancer. I was very close to him & supported him Alot during the last few months of his life. Since then I've had to sort most things out related to funeral, his finances & clearing his house ready for selling (probably the hardest thing ever for me)

I keep being told I'm doing really well considering but It's been really hard at times. Even now, I'm not sure what to do to deal with losing him & how to get back to Normal. I lost my job in August which was good at the time, as I got to spend more time with my Dad & stop Juggling everything. But now I could do with finding a new job but that prospect, even the interview process is Terrifying to me. I attempted a couple of interviews b4 Christmas but I ended up in tears. So is there any useful resources or experience from other's of coping with grief when your on the spectrum & also new job/interview advise would be very helpful. Thanks in advance x

  • Hi. I'm really sorry to hear about your dad.

I'm currently waiting for my diagnostic assessment - I decided I wanted to get to know myself better.

In terms of looking for a new job, have you ever tried getting a mentor/career coach? Lots of charities and organisations offer mentoring schemes and you can usually access them for free. I had a few sessions with a career coach through work a couple of years ago, and she really helped me with careers advice and CV/interview skills. Mine was organised through work, but I'm sure there'll be other schemes available.

In terms of grieving, all I can advise is to give yourself time. You might find it helpful to speak to a counsellor if you want support with working through your feelings and moving forward.

  • Thanks for the tips. Luckily I've been having counselling at the Hospice since just after he passed away so that is helping. Also just joined the drop in group session & met a couple of new friends, one in particular who I spent some time with on Saturday, as she lives in the same village & randomly messaged me to go for a walk Smirkx
