Why doesn't he want to wear his coat?

Hi, my little boy is 5 and a half, he was diagnosed ASD just before his third birthday.  For some reason he has decided he doesn't want to wear coats this winter. Last year we had hardly any trouble with getting him to put his coat on to go outside.  When he first started refusing to put it on we thought maybe it was too small as he has grown alot lately but we are having difficulties with the new coat now.  It is a big cause of stress for us and him and I would just really like some advise.

Thanks

  • hi - could be any number of reasons.  He may have decided he won't wear it because he didn't in the summer.  Something sensory, such as the fabric itching, rubbing?  My son always, always wears a vest.  Always has a tee shirt, but absolutely never a shirt.  Always has long sleeved pjs.  Always wears them to bed, regardless of temperature. Your son may have created a rule for himself.  Does he register hot and cold well?  My son doesn't and he's an adult.  He may not feel the cold the way you do, or heat, so the coat may seem superfluous to him.  Perhaps a rewards system might work?  Does he understand why he needs his coat?  Maybe story boards?  bw
