Finding a Job

I have seen on the NAS website that NAS gives out autistic friendly employer awards.

Does anyone know where I can find a list of who has received these awards in my area?

I want to know because I am looking for a job.

  • The story of my life since graduation in 2001.

I had been involved with a few Disability/Autism-related employability schemes. However, I couldn't maintain any of them due to the red tape around ESF Funding. During that time, I tried several hair-brained schemes to find a career path. None of which had any substance.

  • I'm sorry to hear that Desmond. I feel lucky that I didn't know what to do after school so went to a separate college than the rest of my class and trained to be a bilingual secretary. I can't remember much French or German but I did learn to type! After 30 odd years of struggling with jobs, mainly due to interactions with managers, dealing with unfairness etc and then walking out I have finally found a job with the NHS I will like - typing, typing and typing only. No patients, no phone calls, no hassle. I'm hoping it will take me to retirement now! It was a struggle getting this one, I had a poor reference from my last job.

You're a lot younger than I am so don't despair. Are there any charities in your area that could help?  What about Access to Work? There is "The Brain Charity" that helps those with neurological conditions and can help you with applying for Access to Work help. I'm not sure but hopefully ASD would fall under a neurological condition.

I'm sure you've probably exhausted all the avenues though after so long trying. I hope you find an organisation to help.

  • I'm from Northern Ireland, so may not have the same programmes as Britain.

I contacted the NAS office at Carryduff, and they will send me an application form for the young adult social group in Belfast.

  • yea i got the same from the NAS office in  ballymena  ie very little. did u join the social group ?

the NICS  IT department ( northern ireland civil service ) are recruiting right now - u would have to do an aptitude test  which you should pass and they do say they want ppl with disability to apply.
