Can't find a job.

My 24 year old stepson is struggling to find employment.  He has qualifications to BTec level, he dropped out of his IT degree course suffering from anxiety.  He's been applying for entry level admin and IT roles for the last couple of years but with no success.  He will often get to the first interview stage but no further.

Does anyone know of any businesses that employ autistic adults in entry level roles?  And additionally does anyone know of any IT apprenticeships that are autistic friendly?

Thank you in advance.

  • According to the law, people with disabilities have the right to assistance in finding employment and accompaniment at work. I resent that you have been rejected many times, even though your stepson has a BTec qualification. Finding a job in today's world is tough, so you should not give up and keep looking. Finding a high-paying job took me a long time, but I got lucky and now work in a primary industry. I try to do my job professionally because is basic industries a good career path. I am sure you will do well, and your stepson will be able to accomplish a lot.

  • If you need help finding a job, contact a staffing agency, place an ad on social media, or try job search sites.

  • There is a job crisis just now so all that he can do is keep trying. I have a masters degree in engineering and my friend has a degree similar to your sons and we are both struggling to find employment. I have applied to almost 100 jobs in 2019 and not been able to get one yet

  • Hello,

I have to say, your stepson sounds exactly like me! I too have a BTEC Level 3 in ICT, and a Foundation Degree in Computing. I have also been applying for entry level admin and IT jobs, just to get a foot in the door. I have also made it to the interview stage dozens of times, but have been unsuccessful, usually the old old story of "Not enough experience".

Ever since I have finished full-time education, I have struggled to find employment. I have only had one paid job in five years, which was a part-time temporary position in a legal firm, where I basically just filed for the different fee-earners.

Don't worry, he sounds bright and perseverant and will eventually get a decent position. I just keep telling myself that and I just "Plod on".
