Dealing with school issues

Hi everyone,

Does anyone else here have a child who also has SEN? I find confronting school about issues around support so stressful and draining. Last year I just let everything get bad because I had so much on my plate but this year I was determined to ensure my child is receiving the support she needs.

It's been awful. I've had to complain about certain staff members (who treated my daughter awfully), have had multiple meetings and phone calls, and things are still terrible for my child.

It really feels like most staff members see support as an optional extra.

Anyway, I am completely exhausted and drained. Anyone else found any ways of making it easier?

    We are on the same page as you!

    Fighting with preschool to get one to one support, challenging OT and SLT.

    It’s frustrating to realise that so many teachers and professionals don’t really care about the child’s progress.

    Don't give up! Keep fighting!

    Thank you. It took 2 years of school to agree to putting my daughter on SEN support. 2 years on it turns out she isn't actually officially receiving any of the support I thought was in place. It's only done if there are spare staff. The next step is applying for EHC. Yet another battle!

    As of now it looks like I'm keeping DD home until support can be put in place as she doesn't feel safe at school and is suffering terribly.

    I hope you make progress with preschool. The earlier support is given the better outcome. I just wish I hadn't been so trusting and naïve and worried about rocking the boat.

    Thank you. My girl is going to reception next year and we are just starting the EHCP application. 

    We also had the same impression that she is having one to one support at preschool. Her private SLT mentioned to me regarding SIPs workers which should be her one to one. So we inquired the preschool, their answer was due to best practise to avoid over reliance on one key worker, this is not working, but two are ok. So we are hoping one works with her for couple of days and the other one does the other session. However my husband went in last Thursday for a session and realised that they gave her whoever was idle that time and that person who worked with her do not has a clue on SEN. 

    It’s really disappointed as we are so supportive to the school by providing bouncy ball etc and get OT in to do assessment but the school is not doing their part. We also think if she is not learning but Increased her anxiety, best for us to keep her at home but yet we also want her to integrate. So we are looking for other preschool at the moment. 

    Is changing school an option for you?

    Thank you. She's only in y4 and school keep talking about high school and how she needs to be more independent. Really not helpful as she isn't at the same stage as most kids her age. Thought that was the point of having SEN support!
