Not very practical

I use cider vinegar mixed with water to wash my pots and to clean the tops of my worktops, I noticed today that there are strains from where the vinegar has dried running down the kitchen drawers and cupboard doors. I feel quite upset by it but I don't want to use the standard products sold in supermarkets as the ingredients in them make me feel ill.

I clean my bath with a homemade cleaning product I make out of a mixture of liquid Castille soap, water and lemon oil. It feels clean but there are odd marks on some parts of the bath that I think it's caused.

There are many places in my flat that need dusting and there's unused space on the bookshelves and in some cupboards.

When I hoover I struggle to get most the dust up from the carpet I think, and tend to just focus on picking up all the visible bits on the floor instead.

Some of these things drive me nuts sometimes. Anyone else?

I love how you guys seem more into using natural cleaning products where as I’m more of a ‘just nuke it all with bleach’ kinda girl! To be fair though that’s an OCD leftover too and a Nursey thing! I ‘know’ the germs that exist and that ‘only’ bleach will annihilate them!

I only use pure bleach in my bathrooms though, just to be sure that they’re fully sterilised! Bleach is fabulous on lime scale too! I use Detol on the kitchen worktops and cupboards and on the dining room table cloth (it’s a water proof) cloth.

It really irks me if I’ve just hoovered and I can still see bits on the floor, I’d also go around picking up all the bits by hand. This was more of an issue with my old hoover which kept getting blocked up but I got a new one by Shark a few months ago and it’s not so much of a problem now, good hoover!

That reminds me, those bathrooms could do with a good scrub today...

  • Vinegar is probably even better than bleach for limescale - you need an acid! Commercial products like Viakal are great too as they foam up and sit on the limescale to give it a good soak. We were Dyson fans for years but now have a Shark & it's great apart from the fact that it won't stand up on it's own & either has to be hung on its bracket or laid down on the floor!

I read somewhere once that "Cleaning and tidying with kids in the house is like clearing the drive while it's still snowing" & this is true even when they are in their early 20s (perhaps even more so!).

  • Vinegar is good for lime scale, I’ve used it before, so is the combination of bicarbonate of soda and lemon juice. BUT they don’t ‘kill all known germs dead’ the way that bleach does. I’m also diagnosed with OCD and while I don’t consider that I currently have it, I do get ‘splinter’ OCD habits that prevail. Definitely with germs, especially sickness bugs, I mean why do those things even have to exist?! Best to just obliterate the lot!

I used Dyson hoovers for years, but they always end up blocked in a way that’s physically impossible to unblock. The manufacturers make them that way on purpose I’m sure, so that people have to buy a new one every few years! I switched to Shark on the advice of a friend of mine who used to be an accountant and is VERY switched on with cost effective products and equipment.

Trying to keep the house clean and tidy with young children in the house is pretty much impossible though to be honest the other adults in the house make more mess than the litluns ever do!!!
