Not very practical

I use cider vinegar mixed with water to wash my pots and to clean the tops of my worktops, I noticed today that there are strains from where the vinegar has dried running down the kitchen drawers and cupboard doors. I feel quite upset by it but I don't want to use the standard products sold in supermarkets as the ingredients in them make me feel ill.

I clean my bath with a homemade cleaning product I make out of a mixture of liquid Castille soap, water and lemon oil. It feels clean but there are odd marks on some parts of the bath that I think it's caused. 

There are many places in my flat that need dusting and there's unused space on the bookshelves and in some cupboards. 

When I hoover I struggle to get most the dust up from the carpet I think, and tend to just focus on picking up all the visible bits on the floor instead.

Some of these things drive me nuts sometimes. Anyone else?

  • I'm diagnosed as OCD, so I could probably go on and on about cleaning! OCD traits are more common in people with autism as a percentile, so I'd imagine there's quite a few more of us here with cleaning talking points!

    As for the vinegar stains, the solution is oddly enough more vinegar! Use a very mild dilution of white vinegar in water, and gradually lift off the stains. It might take a few goes over, but let it dry each time. White vinegar is usually the best vinegar to use as it has a low sugar content. Sugar can cause stains.

    With the bath use bicarbonate of soda, mixed with white vinegar. 1/4 of the amount of bicarb to a measure of white vinegar. Leave it on the bath for quarter of an hour, and it will be as clean as you can get.

    Do you spend much time cleaning? I think I should do more. Could do with clearing out some DVDs, serving trays etc. too to make it easier to clean my bookshelves. Cold sweat

    Far much more time than I'd like to! It's a bit of a downer some days!

    I ripped all my DVD's onto a hard drive. Then boxed them up, taped up the boxes, and relegated them to the loft. I only kept a few out, those were just classics that I couldn't bear to box up! It saved me space and a lot of cleaning though. I've done it with books, and video games too. I couldn't save those to a hard drive, but I just chose which ones to keep out, boxed up the others, and put them in the loft or garage. It's saved me a lot of cleaning, and got rid of some dust traps!

    If you've got any a hard drive, get a decent DVD ripping program, and rip them onto a drive. I saved a load of space and hassle!

    I used cimmamon sugar, and made a sauce from Ovaltine to dip. I'm really getting into cinnamon sugar again. Mind you vanilla sugar isn't too sloppy!

    YouTube is amazing for recipes and videos about how to do pretty much anything actually. I get a lot of my tagine recipes from online!

    I can get lost in YouTube cooking videos for hours sometimes. Mind you I watch Pioneer Woman most days on the Food Channel. She has a knack of making things with stuff you might have lying around. It's real accessible.

    I liked my nan's tagine, she's too old to make one now. She just had this knack for them!

  • I have a 10tb drive for everything. I did a lot of downloading in the good old days of the internet, as well as the DVD's. I've got 2tb left after putting on all the music, films, and pdf's of comics.

    I tend to put a load of stuff on a flash drive in regards to films. So I can carry a good few films around on my keyring.

    Love the digital age for portablity!

    Vinyl's my last problem. I just can't be bothered to rip it all. That would be time consuming. I'll get around to it!

  • I bought a few Buffalo Mini-NAS drives - 2.5" RAID HDDs, 1TB each, 5W max power consumption - I've ripped all my CDs and DVDs to them so they're all available on the network - along with all the photos & shared files & Windows drivers in case of hardware failures/updates - all the drivers are on our network.

    All the discs are safely boxed up in the garage.

  • That's a sound idea ripping the DVDs onto the hard drive. I should probably get rid of most my cookbooks too, most of them never get used and I use more recipes from online. It seems better online with being able to look for second opinions on stuff and having youtube videos with video instruction too.
