Getting a diagnosis

I think I have high functioning autism. My girlfriend suggested that I might and all the research, as well as every test that I've done, confirms that.

First of all, is it weird that I want this to be my diagnosis? It would explain so much and just the thought of that is comforting because for so long I've felt deeply out of place and pressured in social situations, most particularly because of selective mutism around people my own age that I don't know. I'm hoping that having a diagnosis would help me deal with that.

Secondly, I was wondering how long it usually takes to get diagnosed. I have a GP appointment next week but from reading other posts I'm assuming that it takes a while.

Thanks! x

  • Perfectly normal to want the diagnosis; I was the same. Otherwise, you are left with the symptoms but without rationale.

It could be Social Anxiety triggered by something in your past, and you don't have to have autism to suffer with this. I thought this was me at first, but it turned out I am autistic as well.

I suspect it varies area to area. From referral to diagnosis it took me less than six months.
