Question about intermittent hyper sensitivity.

Ive finally after 4 years got my inital assessment. They already spoke to my parents over the phone for 2 hours so i guess they think theres something there worth looking into.

I have a question about hypersensitivity. So i dont like certain foods because of the texture like jelly or banana. So i avoid those and i believe i have hypersensitive smell as i can often smell someones perfume before i can even see them and find it unbearable. I also get very very bad noise hypersensitivity. Which - this is going to be hard to explain - but i take a step back. Like i let someone else drive. Its so hard to explain but its pretty much as if im letting my body take over and carry out whatever it needs to do whilst my brain just disappears for a while. The same thing happens when im in crowds and even though people arent near me it feels like im constantly being touched even though i can physically see that im not. Like the wind when someone walks past makes me feel like they are touching me and barging me out the way or pushing me but they arent.

Everything apart from the texture thing comes and goes though. I dont have hypersensitive smell, touch or smell the time but id say maybe twice a week. Sometimes more dependant on crowds and stuff. Is this an autistic thing or just a normal thing? Ive never actually discussed it with anyone.

Tia.

  • Yes it comes and goes and is more noticeable in stressful situations. Ladies' perfumes can have an instant impact on me, but only certain ones, and it can be very brief.

I can be in a lift at work, and smell a certain perfume, and I'm instantly transported back to my childhood, as though I'm a schoolboy again, and I'm completely intimidated by my teacher.

I'm in my fifties and a brief smell can do this in an instant. Bear in mind I'm from a generation where I was regularly slippered and caned at school. I know now that I wasn't in control of my naughtiness, but hay ho, different times.

My main sensory challenge is touch, and with that I would say it affects me constantly if I let it; e.g. being unable to wear rings and watches, and not having dry soil on my hands etc.

  • I find that my hypersensitivity fluctuates depending on how I'm feeling and the environment I'm in. Some days it doesn't bother me at all, but other days I feel completely overwhelmed by the noise/sound/smells. I tend to find I'm hypersensitive when I'm particularly stressed/anxious, or when I'm in an environment with lots of sensory input (e.g. if the office is noisy and the air con is on, I struggle with the noise, the brightness of the lights, and temperature regulation).
