Adult autism diagnostic services not universal in the UK?

Following on from a query that arose in the Futurelearn Understanding Autism course (which I'm enjoying for the second time now), I'm wondering if there are still areas in the Uk that have no diagnostic services.

i found this on the NAS website - "In 2009, most areas in England didn’t have an adult diagnosis service. Now almost all (93%) do."  Is that figure still current and does that mean there are still 7% of areas in England which have nothing?  I'm shocked.  What are people in these areas supposed to do?  Does anyone here live in such an area?

  • Stowmarket is way out of area so we dont get covered sadly. I'd had the gp and cbt look into it

I had to go an hours drive to get diagnosed myself in another county a bit like @Jonesey described below, oddly enough their was an NHS diagnostician half an hour away that did home visits ~ but the CCG would not fund that and left me to deal with the extra stress induced seizures after the diagnosis jaunt.

    Hey ho!

Just as thought though . . . when you wrote about having no options other than to go for a private diagnosis at your own expense; have you considered:

NHS England Patients. If your GP decides that you need to see a specialist, you can request to have treatment from a list of private hospitals or clinics. The e-Referral Service allows you to choose the time, date and hospital or clinic for your required treatment.

    Perhaps?
