Help undertstanding my diagnosis

Hello,

I had my assesment this month, and recieved my letter today to say i did have autism spectrum disorder.

Is this different from apsergers or isit all the same thing ?

Just not really sure if thats a general umbrella or a specific thing.

Thank you

  • Congratulations! Yes, except some diagnosticians still prefer to use the term Asperger's. Some also use both terms at once, to ensure no misunderstanding. I would imagine that approach is to give some indication of degree to any NHS practice who receives the diagnosis; avoiding the use of more judgmental terms that might have been used in the past. It might have helped if this had been done in your case, but I suppose it only really indicates the assessor's personal preference. I note also that I was informed of the verdict immediately after the questioning/observation finished. But it was stated that a more detailed letter & statement would follow in the post. Perhaps that is not always possible for some assessors, but I reckon that is the best approach if possible, since it means you can also be given some on-the-spot support in coming to terms with the diagnosis. The assessor can also share the positives of the event, and can even do the usual psychology thing in these circumstances; which is to ask you how you feel about what you have just heard.
