Volunteering in Cambodia!

Hi everyone.

I'm a newly qualified Speech and Language therapist working out in Cambodia. In the orphanage, I am working alongside another newly qualified SLT in a class of Autistic people aged from 11 - 30. Any advise on communicating and working with this age group would be much appreciated! All of them are non verbal and most are self-stimulating and do not respond to structured activities.

I'm mainly looking for some pointers on sensory-based activities. I'm also obviously way over my head with the language barrier. But if there are any language based ideas, we can hire a translater to explain them to the teachers!

One more thing, the teachers have asked for some particular help with one boy. 18 years old, he is very self-stimulating and likes to hold objects close to his face and the feel of them on his lips. However, he is also very possessive and will steal objects off others and hit them. The staff are worried about his strength and the safety of the other children.

Any help would be so much appreciated!!!

Thank you so much!
