I can't bear to watch Springwatch

It's still on right now. Tune in and look at how Chris Packham's fellow presenters interact with him. I am picking up a lot of aggression from the fellow male presenter and the woman next to him seems to be patronising him in her body language and facial expressions. I find it too hard to watch.

  • Interesting - a TV presenter with a particular passion who has kind of a 'marmite' effect on audiences and who's fellow presenters may feel the need to distance themselves from / counter their impact plus their employer seems to need/want to do the same...

    - Jeremy Clarkson

    - Hugh Fearnley-whittingstall

    - Jamie Oliver

    - etc.

There are loads more who exhibit the same kind of behaviour and I'd say get similar treatment... are they all 'on the spectrum'? If they aren't, does that mean if they were treated the way Chris Packham is being treated thin that's OK?

    I'm kind on NAS62419 & Esmerelda's wavelength - he's passionate but misinformed and taking a blinkered view, kind of a ***, actually.

And I guess it makes me cringe a little that for a lot of people Chris Packham = Asperger's... and not in a positive way

  • i do not like the man, he is very selective about which animals should be protected, hes a hypocrite. he ignores the damage many species do and the need to control them. He is an absolute tool. However, i do not believe his condition should be brought into it. hes a prat because hes a prat, not due to his diagnosis.
He is the one who used to steal birds from the wild, thinks we should let pandas die out, who thinks culling rats shouldnt be allowed despite the risks of disease like leptospirosis. he thinks corvids who maim lambs and ewes, destroy songbird nests, destroy ground nesting birds nests like the curlew and lapwing should somehow be more protected than they already are. Woodpigeon already cause £155 million in damages to crops, and thats with widespread hunting, but he somehow thinks they should be afforded more protection. yet hes in favour of culling apex predators...
He honestly has no idea about the countryside, much like springwatch he thinks its all cute and fluffy. It isnt.

  • I am probably way off but maybe they are trying to seem distant, he has been receiving death threats (which is totally wrong) but maybe they are trying not to come across as agreeing with him so they don't get the same threats?

Like I said I'm probably wrong it was just a thought

  • He is a national treasure. I didn't personally get the impression the other people on the show were that keen on him, it reminded me of social situations I've been in where people looked at me a certain way. Though I guess Michaela Strachan has worked with him a long time.

  • I admire him for always standing up for his cause. I met him last year, what a lovely bloke...

  • A final word from Chris:

“All this antipathy just strengthens my resolve. For me it’s the result that counts and if the result of this hoo-hah is that we have gained better protection for British wildlife then all of that will have been worthwhile.”

Chris has promised not to be actively (vocally) following his campaigns when SpringWatch is on live.  I imagine the BBC are running scared about not upsetting a minority that do not support his wildlife campaigns.

So....bottom line, I fear he has been muted at the moment to gauge public opinion. An online petition was raised to get him sacked from the BBC (over 138,000 people had signed it). Disappointed  On a positive note.. he received his CBE earlier this month.

    __

"In every way he is a force of nature, and a skilled communicator. He’s got plenty to say – if he does have a mute button it’s little used – but he’s aware of the potential conflict of interest. “As you know, I am a great champion of the BBC and its impartiality and I am in constant dialogue with them about how to make sure I maintain that impartiality.

“I am not a BBC employee, I am a freelancer who’s recruited to talk about wildlife on TV because it’s a field of – and I use inverted commas here – expertise. BBC viewers expect to see people talking about their subject with authority, whether it’s history, music, cooking, gardening or natural history. And that’s what I continue to do. But you don’t hear me talking about any of this other stuff on Springwatch…”

I am of the belief that they have muted him for this first episode just in case.  I hope the picture improves...

Like most Aspies... we carry the marmite gene.  You either love us, or hate us.

They seem to trust Michaela Strachan as his carer and the sections with the two of them together, flow well.
