I think I might have to compromise

Most people are rude to me when they first meet me and I think it's because I dress like George Constanza or Jerry Seinfeld from the Seinfeld sitcom. Polo shirts, shirts, chinos, smart-ish jackets.

I might switch over to hoodies, jogging pants and jeans. Sometimes you just want to catch a break off people, you know? I personally believe in dressing smart but what's the point if it makes people dislike me so much?

Sigh. I really don't like how superficial society is, and how if one doesn't go along with it, people will often refuse to open doors for you. I may as well give way to them, the masses have determined fashion. I need some new social connections, you've got to be pragmatic sometimes, right?

A bit like politics. They have to kiss babies and do a certain kind of publicity campaign or they never get into office. You've got to play the game?

  • Rock your own style!

I wear a short-sleeved white shirt, with skinny tie and smart charcoal trousers to work Mon-Fri even though we have a casual dress policy...

I give myself 'casual Fridays' - people now comment that they 'think it's Friday!' if for some reason I have to wear casual clothes on a non-Friday... it's my 'thing'.

Also, it seems odd that people would be rude based on the clothes you describe. Can you provide an example?

    Maybe you are misinterpreting?

  • It could be my stiff body language sometimes. Stiffness + smart clothes = looks like a shop dummy?

  • Neek! Greetings to You... I actually logged off but then logged back on in case people misinterpreted the word "strange" as "bad"... but, well, that is that. But You, wearing a Tie with Short Sleeves, such a rebel, I would never dare do that...  ;-)

...It is not odd at all, really. I could provide a lot of examples, but I am not here that often... but, it is a very common thing; That it does not happen to anyone is a good thing and how life should be.

I live in London. Formal clothes, around Kensington, Knightsbridge, Bank, (rich people?!)... they are polite and accepting. Anywhere else, if You are not wearing a uniform or are not a Lawyer/Office Worker then, there is some disrespect.

Generally the wearing of a TIE is a very big deal with regards to how one is treated. I could go on but I kind of want to sign off and see how this Thread develops later on if I can. Plus this reply is long enough already...
