Hello everyone, I am new here and have recently been referred for an ASD assessment (aged 41), and awaiting a formal diagnosis (which as I have heard could take until the next millenia).

I wanted to find out from others what have your experiences been if you are working full-time?  I presently work full-time and get so drained by the end of the day due to many sensory and noise factors, anybody have any tips or advice to share.  Thank you in advance :)

    my daughter was diagnosed 3yrs ago with Aspergers. So after doing the online test myself, and scoring highly asked the doctor for an assesment. No was the answer, go private.....

    So I'm 53 and have always been called weird, mad and lots of other derivatives. 

    I have worked full time until about 12 years ago. I was always feeling very tired and stressed by the end of the day. I work part time now and find the balance a lot better. I now have three days a week where I can just be. 

    I work in a busy supermarket cafe and the noise is overwhelming at times, so when I get home I just sit in silence and read for about an hour just to calm down. I also have to deal with really rude people and I do get reprimanded for being rude back. I don't get why customers can talk to you as they wish but I cannot!

    I find meditation helpful, I do this every night before I go to sleep, it helps calm me down before trying to get to sleep. There are loads on You tube. It takes a while to get used to it.

    Maybe speak to your boss and tell them that you are struggling. They may make suggestions in your workplace that could help. Is there a quiet space you could take your brakes in. Could you reduce your working hours, go in later and finish later?

  • Thank you for sharing your experience and for your suggestions.  Unfortunately, I work for the NHS and so far, sadly, my managers have not been supportive and have even suggested that my current role as a nurse may not be for me (which makes me extremely unhappy, as I love my job).  However, I do struggle with a very busy and noisy environment, due to sensory sensitivity.  I will however, try the meditation which you suggested, as I feel anxious all of the time and frequently have to go to the toilet, just to have a few minutes for a time out to gather my thoughts.
