DVLA notifiable condition change.

I have only just become aware of the change made by DVLA that now means EVERYONE with ASD/AS (also ADHD) must declare their diagnosis. Not just like previously when it required declaring only if it affected driving.

How did they make this change without anyone being informed? It is a big worry now. A decision is supposed to be made by DVLA regarding declaration within 6 weeks. How is that going to happen with the sudden huge influx of extra forms they recieve and investigations they have to make?

I've been driving for 17 years. I have been autistic all my life. I got my diagnosis 2 months ago. It makes no sense.

I am worried. I am posting here to see if anyone has already declared and what happened next?

  • The advice seems to have changed now.  They have added a qualifier again:

    Asperger syndrome and driving

You must tell DVLA if you have Asperger syndrome and it affects your driving.

So have they changed their mind again due to intervention by someone on high?
(the above was taken from gov website tonight (4 March) at 6:30pm)  Similar advice for ASD ...
  • This needs confirming as the 'final, irrefutable advice' by NAS as there has been such conflicting device, first you don't, then you do, then you don't, you do the hokey cokey and turn about and its different again.

So NAS, can you get a statement from the DVLA to say that we definitely only need to inform DVLA if our driving is adversely affected by our autism and also what will happen to those who have notified based on the advice that everyone needs to notify who is autistic.

It would also be nice to know the rationale for the changing of the mind in the first place given that they have now reverted to the original advice.

  • Totally agree. It's beyond thoughtless causing anxiety to people who are already prone to worrying anyway, all for the want of a little careful proof reading.

If anyone had checked this, I am sure they would have pointed out how unreasonable it was.

  • I am annoyed about this, not because of the u turn but because it was all so unnecessary,.caused unnecessary anxiety to a group of people (us).for no reason, was not thought through as to the consequences and there was no evidence for.the change.in the first place.

I hope a full and proper investigation will be instigated as well as proper publicity for the correct.advice as I would imagine forms.are.still.being completed.unnecessarily and google.searches bring up wrong advice from various press releases and cuttings agencies.
