DVLA notifiable condition change.

I have only just become aware of the change made by DVLA that now means EVERYONE with ASD/AS (also ADHD) must declare their diagnosis. Not just like previously when it required declaring only if it affected driving.

How did they make this change without anyone being informed? It is a big worry now. A decision is supposed to be made by DVLA regarding declaration within 6 weeks. How is that going to happen with the sudden huge influx of extra forms they recieve and investigations they have to make?

I've been driving for 17 years. I have been autistic all my life. I got my diagnosis 2 months ago. It makes no sense.

I am worried. I am posting here to see if anyone has already declared and what happened next?

  • The page is inconsistent. The first paragraph says you must tell them if you have ASD, but both sub-sections (Car/bike, lorry/bus) say you must tell them if it affects your driving.

I suspect poor drafting / proof reading of the web page. I don't know where you'd look for the original source of the law. Road traffic act?

The fine also says it is applicable if you fail to notify conditions *that affect your driving*.

So I suspect there has been no change, just poor attention to consistency in the web page.

This doesn't help us drivers of course! Could ring them I guess & ask them to clarify - any time I've called them they've been very helpful.

Anecdotally, my wife told them about something unrelated to ASD and they wrote back saying effectively "Thanks for telling us, no action required, don't worry about it".

  • My mum has to notify them for her Transvere Myteits (3 years ago) and to say she was only allowed to drive automatics (clutchleg spasms and is numb in certain areas) now and that she was deemed safe to drive and was told similar to what you said
