Diagnosis

Hi

I’m new to the site and was hoping some of you nice ladies might give me a bit of advice. This is a very very short version of my story.   I am fairly certain my adult daughter is on the high functioning autistic spectrum.  I feel she also has an inkling but i think she may be scared.  I don’t think telling her bluntly what I think is the way forward so just wondered what prompted some of you to get a diagnosis. Again, I’m not trying to push her into anything I’m just looking for a bit of hope, I’m quite worried about her  and as she lives quite a distance from me it’s hard to talk to her or try to be there for her.

Thank you

  • Hi, yes I’ve done a lot of research into the female side and what we always thought of as quirky in her character particularly as a child now seem to point to AS. The mimicking is particularly obvious, she started doing it as a child but then it was tv she mimicked now it’s the person who is her current friend.  Thank you for your input.

  • There's quite a lot of information on the web about how ASD presents in women, it's worth looking into further as it does present very differently in women. So if someone is just looking for classic male signs of autism then they would miss a lot of the signs in a woman.

  • Just had a quick look at Tania Marshall website, haven’t come across her I’ve watched the Tony Attwood video amongst many other things but that’s really helpful, I will have a good look tomorrow. Thank you

  • I’d find a good definition / list of symptoms for women , like the Tania Marshall check list, and send the link or pass it on. Just as something for her to consider. When I was young I would never have considered I was autistic as I only knew the ‘typical’ male presentation, I wish there was something this, or, even better, a mum who was interested enough to look into it for me. Even if it’s not ASD, good on you for trying to help.
