People management courses for people with Aspergers

Hey,

I had my annual appraisal at work today and 1 of the things my boss wants me to do is 'improve my people skills'. I haven't told him that I am on a waiting list for an autism assessment, a bit premature I thought to go into the whole world of trying to tell him that I identify with having Asperger's, so I just agreed it wasn't really my strong suit Wink

It did get me wondering though, are there any courses or literature out there to help people with Asperger's at least to pretend to be better at such things? Grin . A quick google has showed lots of stuff about NTs managing people with autism, but I want the other way round!

I know any such training and implementation will probably just add to my stress by having to fake it even more than I do now, but I can't really just ignore my boss's request.

Cheers!

  • Hi Daisy,

Thanks a lot that sounds really interesting, will definitely look into it!

  • Hi CraigyD

I hear you - I had almost exactly the same conversation a few years ago!

I found that a great place to start is to think of personality traits as data - when you know a bit about the main NT 'types' it's easier to spot who is what type, and therefore how they are likely to react in different circumstances.  This lady came to work with us at my workplace and did lumina spark profiles for us, she explained it really well and had 2 page overview she shared - I can't find the handout at the moment, might have been lost in the office move.

The sample report on page above is quite long but the diagram on page 13 shows the total personality options. We all have different amounts of each of the words as part of our 'type'.  Would your boss pay for you to get your profile done - then you can get the 'cheat sheet' that helps you spot other people's types. Or the whole team can do it?! we did it as a team and everyone finally 'got' that we all have different ways but we all have something to offer.

I can remember the main bits because all the people in my family are different colours and we drive each other crazy!

Red people like you to be direct and talk about work, much less interested in small talk and what you did at the weekend

Blue people like lots of detail and precision, more task, less people

Green people love people and want everyone to be happy first before talking about work stuff - they know everyone

Yellow people are creative and don't like detail and logic - a bit full-on and have a million friends!

    hope that's some use

    Daisy
