What’s the best way to decline invitations to parties and other such social events? I am usually pleased to have been invited, but at the same time very reluctant to actually go. I also don’t want to offend anyone. Over the years I have tried various ways of declining such invitations but I still feel uncomfortable. Any suggestions?
"I'm really sorry - it's entirely my fault! I seem to have given you the impression I would be remotely interested in spending time with you..."
I think that might do it.
Well, that would certainly be effective.
I've love to come to your party, but I think I'm scheduled to be gnawing my own arm off that evening sorry.
