Went to see the GP today...

so went to see the GP today for a referral to see if i have ASD (read about the symptoms in a news article and it matched up with how i am, just never knew why i was like that till now)

sat down with the GP, i asked to be referred to get assessed for ASD, doctor asked why, told him, he then said i didn't ask what google says the symptoms are, so feeling frustrated i gets up to leave, GP then says i'll refer you but theres no adult services 

so what am i supposed to do? just struggle on with the endless loop of not wanting to be in social situations, getting a job then getting sacked for either being "rude", not being able to do many things all at once, or not "fitting in" in the workplace, to then end up with a JCP advisor who's only advice is get on with it

im based in east ayrshire, so the medical centre was cumnock tanyard medical centre

so i guess I'm looking for advice, if NHS GP isnt helping - does BUPA cover the diagnostics part?, because i'd sign up with BUPA if it does

  • My doctor referred me using my company health plan - whole thing took less than a week to see one of the head-honchos in the industry and the interview/testing took less than an hour (I am soooo Aspergers). The phrase "clearly has Asperger's" was mentioned many times (and a background savant presentation).

    That was 10 years ago - not sure if it's done that way any more.

    Not the employer - they were good, but it's really the medical insurance company providing the service and depends of what's covered.

    hmm, well from my experience today GP's can only refer to people within an area and if they dont have the service you need tuff - so i bet he's done the referral to crosshouse in kilmarnock (east ayrshire) which does only have child services, but Ayr (south ayrshire) has both adult and child services, but south ayrshire comes under a different district - i do have a feeling i'll need to go private for this then get help/treatments from the NHS after the diagnosis 

    I'm fairly certain i read a law of parliament that every child and adult is entitled to a assessment, think it was the autism act of 2009 - but maybe doctors dont keep up on that sorta stuff

    might also be time to move away from this super small country village lol

    NHS takes forever - private is as fast as the paperwork allows.

    I was also lucky that I'm near London so there's plenty of senior practitioners in the area to choose from (The way it worked was you did your own research about who you needed to see, the ok was given from the insurance company, you got the GP to refer and then you ring and arrange the appointment - that fast).

    I suppose it could be done faster depending on people's availability.
