House adaptation grants

Wondering if anyone knows ? My son is 17 , probably never gone leave home . I was wondering if there’s any financial help to adapt my home to make more space for him eg attic conversion . I phoned the local council she was quite rude and said why does he need more space Rage His bedroom is quite small and he spends a lot of time there I would love to give him his own space for the future.

  • They are pretty secretive about it, but you can get a thing called a personal budget. You need to present your case well.

You can use these to make adjustments. You need to tell them how the lack of space is affecting your son and the rest of the family. It would fall under "buying equipment" or "living adjustments".

Good luck, and all the best.

  • Completely understand your wish to give your son more space of his own. Sadly funding for this will probably be hard to get. Shame the council person was not more understanding.

Is remortgaging an option? Converting the attic would add value to the house.

There are charitable trusts that give grants for, specific purposes and to certain groups of people. That might be worth looking into as well.

The only other thought I had is refitting the room to make more space. On TV interior design programmes they do clever things using built-in furniture.

Good luck - I hope you find a solution.
