5 Second Rule motivation technique

I recently watched this video and I have since found it helps with getting myself to do smaller tasks: https://youtu.be/TVAcs5AHhF4

I wanted to share it in case anyone else benefits too.

If you can't be bothered watching the whole video she basically recommends counting down 5-4-3-2-1 in your head before doing something unpleasant - e.g. waking up instead of hitting the snooze button (it moves your thinking to a different part of your brain).

She also says you should tell yourself you are excited not afraid when you get anxious because they have the same sensation (I don't find this part as effective personally).

  • Thank you for posting this - I am going to try the 5,4,3,2,1 as I get more anxious putting things off than if I just got on with them! It is often something really simple like pressing 'send' for an email.

I use the 'anxiety is really just excitement' thing before job interviews and when I have to make presentations. I also tell myself I will do better if I am feeling nervous.
