Self calming suggestions?

Hi,

Im currently studying at uni and im really struggiling  im practically in tears every day or on the verge of tears.

Im very slow in understanding what i need to do, it taies me ages to understand or i never do. And then in my free time i just want to shut away doing what i lioe then focus on uni.

I struggle alor with maths and physics, even just hearing a mathmaticl term puts me in fear mode and i completly shut off. This is affecting some of my modules and exams where its maths based as im not listining in lectures as im shutting off wihout realising and when it comes to exams i completely self destruct and i cant do anything.

Is there anything i can do to help relax me before exams etc to stop me from going to fear response and shutting off?

I'd suggest going to speak your tutor as soon as possible and explain the difficulties you're having.  If you've only just started the transition to Uni can be quite shocking for a lot of people so you're probably not alone in having issues.

A lot of people feel like you do when they come across maths - there's even a specific term for it - "maths anxiety".  If part of the problem is that you're unfamiliar or need some extra help with the maths and physics then your college may be able to help.  A lot of them have "maths support centres" and "learning support centres" and that kind of thing.  Hopefully your tutor should know or can find out how to get you any additional subject help you may need.  They may also be able to point you in the direction of someone who can help with the anxiety.

The worst thing you can do is shut off in the lectures because then you're cutting yourself off from a primary part of the learning resources for that course.  If you have a course text book or the lecturer gives out notes in advance you may find it helps to at least glance over the stuff for the next lecture in advance - even if you only spend 10 minutes  the night before quickly skim reading it.  Then you've "primed" your brain for what's coming up and you may be surprised just how much that helps with keeping up with the lectures.

What course are you doing and where in London are you studying?  I got my degree from Royal Holloway, University of London and have never really left the area since I went.

tfw has given some good suggestions for relaxing.  I've never gotten completely over exam nerves but I can usually cope with them now.  I find the thing I can do most to lessen them is to just prepare as much as I can to the point I'm satisfied and then just hope I can do myself justice in the exam.  We all have bad days and courses that we didn't get on with so well, but usually most Uni courses allow you to have a couple of slightly weaker modules without impacting your overall mark.
