25-year-old Depressed man with CP & Autism

I am a carer for an amazing young man who struggles physically and is non-verbal. I really want to help him get out of depression and believe that if he could communicate with someone who aligns with his experiences in life, he may see the world in a new light. I'm relatively new to my role and write this post hoping that someone can point me in the right direction or feels that they might be able to help. He thinks that no matter how much we empathise with him we will never fully understand his struggle, and he is right.

We are located in the UK and reach out to the community to see if anyone can help him in any way possible.

Thank you for taking the time to read this!

  • Hi Jack,

In terms of face-to-face connections, I haven't heard of the sort of service you are looking for but I've pulled together a few links that you could search and you might be able to find something that works?

Firstly, you may be interested in contacting a local National Autistic Society branch. Our branches offers support to local autistic people and their families. If you interesting in checking if there is a local branch near to you, please follow the link below:

    http://www.autism.org.uk/services/local.aspx

You may find it useful to have a look at our Community Care page on our website. The page contains information about community care services, at home or in the community, that may be available to you:http://www.autism.org.uk/about/benefits-care/community-care.aspx

You may want to search for services in your area that cater for people with an autism spectrum disorder on our Autism Services Directory: www.autism.org.uk/directory.aspx

If you don't find anything relevant in these links, you may like to contact our Autism Helpline team who can provide you with information and advice . You can contact the team via telephone on 0808 800 4104 (Monday to Thursday 10am to 4pm, Friday 9am to 3pm). Please note that the Helpline is experiencing a high volume of calls and it may take a couple of attempts before you get through to speak to an advisor. Alternatively, should you prefer to send a message, you can do so via their webform:

Of course, there is this community too, if he has computer/internet access and would like to communicate in this way, it is a very warm group who I'm sure would make him feel welcome.

    Kind regards,

    Heather - Mod
