Unread notifications "lightning bolt" thing

ok since the inlgorious revamp, even though I think I have unchecked subscriptions, and unchecked every notification referring to subscriptions, why oh why does the blimming bolt thing tell me i have 4 unread notifications to subscriptions!! (At least it;s only 4 now,,.it was 13 yesterday...)

I want to be notified of replies to threads I've posted in, but not anything else. Under the old site I had this set up correctly.

But why isn't it working now?????????? grrrrrr

  • I'm not sure whether this will help, but you have quite a lot of control over notifications. First of all, if you click on the lightning bolt and get the list of notifications, they should refer to threads in which you have posted, and so on, i.e. they should all be relevant to you and what you have been doing. And if you hover over one of those (in the list that appears when you click on the bolt), you should get buttons to mark it read. Do they help?

Secondly, this thread is discussing live alerts, but of course there are also email notifications. You can control both types of notification via your user settings, on the notifications tab. You may see options there relating to features that we are not yet using; I recommend that you just turn off any notification that you are currently receiving, and do not want. Alternatively, turn everything off in one column if, for example, you want email notifications but not live alerts.

Finally, of course, your browser can block notifications (i.e. live alerts), regardless of your settings on this site. That's true for any site that uses notifications. Browsers normally ask whether to allow notifications when you first visit a site. You can change settings later, for example for Google Chrome.

All of that does mean that it's a bit complex to work out what's happening in an individual situation. If you're still having trouble, and you can't clear notifications as above, do mention what settings you have (in so far as you can determine them), what you've done to clear any rogue notifications, and whether you're using a desktop or a mobile device.
