Feeling useless

Hi,

I am a 28 year old man and was diagnosed with ASD in the early part of this year. I have been having difficulty in securing and maintaining work and now I am not enthusiastic about my future. I don't feel I have a future where I can earn a reasonable ammount of money and live independently. I used to work in IT but could not stand working on the helpdesk due to my difficulties. Same with the role I held in HR. All the other entry level roles in IT seem to be these horrid helpdesk positions, I just can't

I do not have a good work future ahead of me. I don't know what to do anymore. I am so tired from trying and failing .

Matt

  • Sorry to read about your problems, Zerris.  I don't know if my experience of being in that position would be of any help to you.

When I obtained an HNC in Computing and looked for IT jobs, I found that a lot of the better paid jobs required qualifications plus a lot of experience (which I didn't have).  I also noticed that there were quite as few IT support jobs in schools, which were temporary, part time and in some cases were also term time - because these didn't pay particularly well, they didn't attract a lot of applicants.  I was prepared to leave home to move to another part of the country to work, so I applied for  these types of jobs to get the experience.  Eventually I got a job and got useful experience while upgrading my qualifications.  I am now in a permanent job working in a school.
