I have been trying to get the diagnosis process moving since last year and a recent visit to the gp says its another 7 to 8 months. Has anyone had similar and found a technique to get it moving?

Maybe you can ask the GP what stage the referral process is now at? In my case, after going to the GP, it took her a month to send out the referral letter. And after sending the referral letter there was a brief screening, and after that they sent a package full of questionnaires to (from the clinic that does the assessments) fill in and send back. And then there's a long long wait (I'm still waiting). So, as a first step, maybe you can make sure the GP has sent out the referral, and if he/she has, then contact the clinic to ask about your position on the waiting list.
