Hello everyone

Hello everyone, I’m new here. I was in need of joining a forum to speak amongst people who get it and the society opened my eyes to this one. So this will be my first post!

Recently been going through a major turn in my life. Along with ASD I have physical difficulty which seems to be worsening. The turn is that I’m being a little bit more self aware. I don’t know if anybody else struggles with recognising bodily issues until somebody else points out that you should see a doctor?

Since becoming more self aware I’ve bren trying to find methods to help myself. But I’m finding a major challenge starting new things. For instance, starting different forms of art to be able to express myself. But I get a kind of physical reaction of disgust and repulsion. I have always had an issue with stationary and textures of material irking me a lot and I suppose the messiness. So I believe art materials brings this out in me.

Currently I’m just comfortable with drawing because it causes less repulsion I think. I’m wondering if anybody has some words on how I can get over this? I hope this easy to understand!

  • Hi there

    Welcome to the forum.

I can't comment on the self-awareness area but have a few suggestions for the art.

Calligraphy was something I tried to use to help improve my hand-writing. It didn't help with my atrocious scrawl but it was neat and fairly tidy. Most pens are either fountain pens that you can load with minimal mess or there are marker pens that can be used to mimic the nibs. Any embellishments or flourishes can also be inked and coloured with pens.

Then there's cartooning - either static or animated - where it is common to sketch ideas first then scan/import into some software to convert into a digital image. Or simply trace it with pens and do the shading with hatching or dots.

How about technical drawing? I started my working life as a cartographer and am still entranced by the beauty of an old map. Then there is archtectural drawing - capturing the beauty of buildings old and new.

But the idea is that these are all options where you can start with pencil sketches and gradually work up to using other media without, necessarily, the mess.

Finally, have you considered the fully electronic option? There are a number of packages that can be used to emulate all sorts of art materials (wet paint, chalks/pastels, pencils/charcoal, inks, etc) but with absolutely none of the mess.

  • Hello. Thank you! When I was in school my English teacher would tell my parents that I have so many different styles of handwriting and its like looking at different students books. So I don't know what the deal is/was with me and handwriting! I am very into architectural drawing. All of what you mentioned I am really interested in, all forms of art. Hadn't much knowledge of cartography! I'm fighting off this resistance to change at the moment. It's a fear and I'm not even too sure of what it is I am so afraid of.
