Ability to tune in or tune out of senses

Are you able to tune in or tune out of your senses?

I find I am normally oblivious to things like sounds and smells and touch but if I pay attention I become hyper sensitive and find my sense of smell hugely improves or I become hyper aware of sounds or touch. Its like I can choose what I pay attention to or what I block out.

Does anyone else have a similar experience?

  • Oh yes, ticking clocks. They are just awful. I can hear them even if they are in the next room. I can fall asleep with noise in the room, as long as it drowns out the ticking, but when the noise stops and there's just the ticking, it wakes me up. Even when I'm awake it's like being stabbed in the brain every second if the only sound is a ticking clock.

I never use alarm clocks, even if I have to wake up really early, because they are just too jarring. No matter what sound they make, any sound that is not present then suddenly there might as well be a foghorn right in my ear (I think that is why I don't like ticking clocks). Somehow I always manage to wake up when I need to, even if it's 5am.

  • I often choose to deliberately switch off to surrounding noise such as people talking but other noises (ticking clocks for instance) I can't seem to switch off. All sounds become exaggerated when I'm trying to sleep and I can't seem to switch off at that time although once I am asleep I NEVER hear alarm clocks. Selective deafness, my family call it.

  • When I'm really tired or a little tipsy, and while I drift off to sleep or am just waking up, I find everything gets really disturbingly loud, even the sounds that are so faint I'd hardly notice them under normal circumstances. I think I have found a way to block my senses on a subconscious level and that ability goes away when I am not as conscious as usual. I'm not sure if that's the same thing as what you describe, but perhaps it is related.
