Therapy for Autistic Behaviour?

Hello

I'm not sure if I totally resent the idea of therapy for autistic behaviour!  At a first glance it feels like maybe having therapy so that you can 'fit in' and be more neurotypical.  On the other hand, objectively could that be useful?

I guess for me some help around the sensory stuff would be personally useful to me.  I'm not sure though if it's right that I have therapy to dilute my autism to make it more palatable to other people.

I don't have 'challenging behaviour' unless you determine brutal truth as challenging.  I think some people do.  I overload with detail which can be a bit challenging to people.  I don't threaten violence.  I'm never actually violent but I do say just what I think!  I do not lie.

Has anyone had any therapy for Autism, what did you have it for, what kind of therapy did you have and did you think it helped you or made a difference?

Is there anything that you'd recommend?

Thanks in advance.

  • For Autism, they usually recommend CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy).

It works for some persons and not for others. It offers you a series of scenarios and then builds upon how "you" would deal with it, and then how "you" are "supposed" to deal with it. CBT is useful in teaching about how to deal with Social Protocols, to some extent...Yet it does not often address Sensory Issues or unexpected discomfort, such as overwhelming perfume, blinding lights, sudden loud noises, uncomfortable fabrics, food, allergies, etc. etc....

I have never had Therapy for Autism myself, because of the reasons I state there - it would not help me and it is a simulation and not realistic - except towards learning Social Protocols...

Hopefully someone else may give you a better and more "positive" answer than mine, here! And Please note, if you are asking about what applies to Children, then that is quite a different matter. (Can someone else please reply...?)

  • Thank you. Very helpful reply. I promise you this is nothing to do with children even though my username might make you wonder!

No I am HFA adult. I do have ASD children but I’m on here for me. There is an internet full of stuff about children. I find this forum most helpful for getting info from other ASD adults. Info is very “real” and “useful” as I like it

Yes I’m not sure CBT would be useful to me. I can fake all that social stuff for long enough to survive social situations. I’ve studied then and simply “act” what they do.

its tiring the older you get and I’m less inclined to bother now either just not saying much or just not attending.

Thanks again for your reply from what you’ve said it’s as I thought. Also I do feel like therapy could be going down the avenue of “cure” which frankly I don’t want and don’t like the idea of myself.

  • Thanks for your Thanks, there. I hope someone else replies, however. I do not think that CBT "cures" Autism anymore than it can "cure" a missing limb.. i.e. - There is no such thing as a "cure". It may teach "Social Masking"... but this is digressing and so why I hope someone else replies after this... And...

Is there anything that you'd recommend?

...I would recommend doing just as you are doing, staying here, and speaking to other Autistic Adults, here or elsewhere, at least. But it is getting late now, at One In The Morning!

    Fair Play to you.
