Aspergers and PIP

Last PIP assessment I had a few years back, the assessor turned around and suggest I get a diagnosis for ASD and yet this detail was absent from the final report where I got rejected for it.

Hi I am diagnosed with ASD but did not even bother trying for ESA or PIP as the whole process seems overwhelming and too stressful for me ironically. I have heard some people say that the assessors will take advantage of your autism making you feel guilty etc and put words in your mouth so that you don't get it. My cousin said her friend easily got it by answering pre-staged questions to the questions and exagurating and lying although her friend dosn't have autism at all

I have just been diagnosed with autism so my evaluation is based on BPD and BP. Now do not know what to do?

I have Asperger's/Higher Functioning Autism and I don't receive PIP, I've never applied for it, I wouldn't meet the criteria and I don't think that I I should get it. You're right that it's different for different people and I'm aware that some people, especially with the less functional end of Autism rather than Asperger's end certainly would meet the criteria for PIP so I think each case does need to be taken on it's merits (rather than as some on here have previously called for, which is for everyone with a diagnosis to get PIP).

Also remember that currently 67% of PIP assessments are overturned on appeal, so there's a reasonable chance that your appeal will succeed.

The scoring criteria are quite interesting, if you have an idea you could score yourself (be realistic and objective) and see where you think you should be.

What i'm trying to point out here is the HCP don't seem to understand autism at all.  However make sure you take it to appeal if you don't get pip before because that is generally where they do and you will get a proper assessment or fairer assessment for PIP.  Atos, maximus and capita are useless when it comes to autism. 

I have been for a PIP assessment in 2016 after receiving standard rate for care DLA and low rate mobility DLA for life.  The assessor seemed to know nothing about Autism asked me lots of questions as if I had a physical disability and wouldn’t let my mother talk or help me answer any questions that I struggled to understand and answer.  She seemed to think autism is a disability that you grow out of when 18 because its called a developmental disability and she didn’t understand what sensory overload is.  She wrote on the report that I feel as if buses, lights, sound and touch causes me pain in my brain.  She didn’t feel I had problems with communicating, I wasn’t depressed or anxious and I looked fine to her.  I was award no points.  At mandatory reconsideration I wrote a letter stating what autism is quoting from the NAS website and stating what I felt I should have scored points on.  The decision maker then send my letter to another HCP who responded by saying "there is no evidence of any cognitive, physical or intellectual impairments that would prevent you from following any of the activities.”  I was awarded no points again.  I went to CAB and got a lawyer before my appeal and had an independent assessment by a physiatrist and a report from my GP that supported my problems living with Autism.  I won at the appeal and was awarded enhanced care for pip but only 4 points for mobility because I can walk through parks etc and just have problems in busy cities and public transport.  But I was very happy to win.

I have a 1st class degree and I used to have a professional qualification although I resigned from my professional body 7 years ago, 5 years before my diagnosis with ASD / Asperger's

I am glad someone has got it that is classified without intellectual difficulties, because I have Higher level Qualifications have worked even though struggled they seem to base my whole rejection on that. My support worker and autism concern have written the MR Disputing and proving them wrong on their assessment. Hopefully it is enough to get accepted without the hassle of tribunal. 

I have enhanced rate. I am newly diagnosed with autism so my assessment was based on BPD and BP. I work 4 days a week, have a masters degree etc. I felt the key to getting an award was submitting as much independent evidence as possible. I included a letter from work, A2W reports, emails to my master's tutors explaining I was having issues due to my MH, a copy my medical records with the relevant points highlighted, DSA award etc. I believe you can submit additional evidence with your appeal
