Dealing with Praise...

Ok, just had a 'moment' at work.

Did some work for a client, theyre VERY happy with it. squealy happy.

I'm stood there thinking, wtf... it's not that great, and am feeling very uncomfortable.

Its like i wanna run away when anyone wants to praise me for something which i dont feel I should get praise for. just for doing what ive been asked to do...

  • Indeed.

I play melodeon for morris dancing and I get 'That's wonderful - thanks so much for playing' etc. from the dancers.  I'm good, but it's just what I do - I know it could be a lot better.

The same applies at weekends when I do the refreshments for a Gilbert & Sullivan rehearsal (I'm in the band come the performance).  I volunteered to do it (a couple of productions ago) so the one of the cast doesn't have to leave the rehearsal. I knock up 28 portions of cake - different each week - usually on the Sunday morning.  The cakes don't look up to Bake-Off standard as I'm crap at presentation, but taste very good.  As I'm lowering the shutter after serving, I always get a round of applause along with whooping from the cast - totally uncalled for and I find rather cringeworthy - I'm only doing something I know I'm OK at, I volunteered for it, I don't want thanks. I usuall try to hide when they start clapping.

  • there's thanks... and there's overkill. i definitely have 'zones' of comfort.
if its private 1-2-1 praise, I'm ok.

add more people, and it gets worse.

The only time I actually enjoyed the praise and attention was when I went up to collect my degree, because thats something I am extremely proud of.

Im very much all or nothing!
