Just Diagnosed

Hi there, I was diagnosed as autistic just over a week ago ( 2 days before a planned trip to Rome!) I am 57 years old and have had early onset Parkinson’s Disease for the last few years which is very well managed with medication.

I think it is just sinking in now although it's hard to tell as I'm unsure how I feel about it. It does answer a lot of questions from my younger years and I think I am grateful for the diagnosis.

I have been in recovery from alcohol and drugs for the past 17 years and this diagnosis seems to be filling in a lot of the holes that I could never successfully address in recovery.

Sorry for the disjointed ramble but very grateful to have access to this community.

  • Hello. It takes a long time to fully understand the implications and how you are personally affected. Just like climbing a big mountain, over each crest there is another crest. Between each a dip. And like an onion, each layer hides the next.

But eventually you get a clearer picture, good and bad, what you are strong at and what less so, and that knowledge brings more calm.

Removing the confusion in a so helpful. The permission to yourself to feel how you feel is an internal thing that changes everything.

    Good luck.
