Forum broken?

I'm getting an orange banner at the top of pages saying "An error occurred while trying to execute a scr...". The rest is cut off so not sure if there is more info.

In case it is something with my setup because it often can be, I'm using firefox mobile, and I use pi-hole for ad and tracker blocking.

  • I believe there was a former member who had set something up on Discord, but if memory serves I think the purpose of it was to provide members with a safe haven to discuss topics that are frowned upon here.

  • I think the creativity thread may have broken. I've just unpvoted something and the orange banner came up.

  • I’ve had a look under the hood with the available tools - and it’s pretty dated from what I can gather. jQuery and strange network calls - it all looks pretty dated. I suspect they are putting plasters on a forum that is now running legacy tech and it’s got to the point of having so much technical debt now it’s costly to enhance. I am a member of an official ADHD charity group and they simply use Discord for their adult forum. It’s a breath of fresh air and extremely simple to use and setup. There would be nothing stopping someone from setting up their own Discord (or equivalent) group for adults and joining that instead.

  • Yep. I had managed to read and respond to the first two or three comments before signing out, but have been unable to read the others.

How dare Iain use my post to conduct an experiment on. Wink

To be clear, my feathers have not been ruffled.

  • I'm not sure what software the community is using, if it's custom, or how much it is costing to run, but it may be worth considering something widely used like https://www.discourse.org/

  • Interesting that it seems to be some threads rather than the forum as a whole... The error suggests it is some extension which is failing. Possible the extension only runs for certain threads.

  • I wouldn't bet on it, it took them ages and ages to sort out the last lot after an "upgrade", I wonder what the point of upgrades are if they make things worse? I can't see that theres anything better about the site after it's last major upgrade, I think if it aint broke, don't try and fix it.

  • It sucks that there’s been a lot of ongoing problems. I’m getting the same as yours where a lot of threads don’t show any replies but on the homepage it says they have a lot of replies.  Very frustrating. Yet on this page I haven't had any issues like that.

Thanks for the email. I’ll send the community manager an email about the issues I'm having in the hopes that they can get it sorted quickly.

  • Yes, this orange box appears and says something about the executable and it’s been logged for the administrator. I thought I would mention it just in case anyone else is having similar problems and know of a fix. Hopefully if it's reported they can fix it.

Thank you. I hope it can be sorted asap.

  • a way to report the bug?

I think that if everyone reported it there might be a chance of something being done about it (although don't hold your breath).

Communication here by the mods/community manager/whoever isn't good and the forum sadly has a long history of faults despite (or because of) an upgrade a while ago.

The faults will, as before, put a lot of people off of being here and posting. I was going to start a thread a while ago but just thought 'why bother' as it might end up just hanging there.

It's demoralising especially for a place such as here that is meant to be of support.

It's not just the orange box which I'm getting a lot but many threads are just hanging with no replies showing.

I've reported the orange box a lot time ago but haven't received a reply.

    This is the address:

    CommunityManager@nas.org.uk.

    Welcome.

  • It's happening when I try to create a post as well

Oh this is new, so you get it when you try to create a completely new post too?

Thanks for saying, and I hope it gets fixed so you can post more! Welcome!

  • Hi yes me too. On most of the pages I'm getting an orange box in the top right of the screen and I can't write anything on those pages. It's happening when I try to create a post as well.

Does anyone know fi there is a fix for this rr a way to report the bug?

  • Seems to be sorted now. Nice for it not to be me that broke it for a change Joy

  • I thought it was my pooter going kalapluey, I keep getting half a word missing, I thought it was my keyboard but it seems its the site.

  • What   said! It's not you, it is the forum! It is a bit of a pain at the moment that it keeps falling over! I've tried on mobile and pc, same results.

  • It’s not you. There is another thread in which we are talking about this.
