What are your special interests?

I really love learning about other peoples hyperfixations/special interests and - although I struggle to show it - get so happy and excited when someone shares theirs with me. It's probably one of the only things I like more than my own special interest tbh... I love it even more when someone feels comfortable enough to not only tell me what theirs is, but also tell me every detail about it. Even if I have no idea what any of it means, I still love listening.

I'm rambling so I'll just get to the point; I'm curious about everyone here. I had a *** night and this is the first thing that came to mind to make me feel better so I'd love it if someone would be willing to indulge...

  • My special interests (in my case they can also be called obsessions) are:

    1. The Doors (the band). This one is almost a life long interest
    2. Doom metal (won’t go into sub-genres to not over complicate it but as slow, dark, dense and heavy as possible)
    3. Records (vinyls): collecting them and the process of cleaning/protecting them
    4. Melodic house: as ethereal and layered as possible
    5. Sci-fi and post apocalyptic movies/series
    6. Car cleaning: clean cars feel like body/mental cleansing.
    7. F1: the only sport I really follow by heart
    8. Gym exercise: absolute immersion with my music and never interacting with anyone other than to ask if the machine is free
  • I've decided once I've modified it to work as per the original design I'll add the functionality so I can use it as a clock and then leave it switched on and running as a clock.

I think I'll leave it exposed, but with the mains input and the 350V DC that the nixie tubes run on insulated so if someone touches something on it that they shouldn't have they  won't get electrocuted.

  • I don't know if others like old technology, but I've been given an old homemade frequency counter (from Radcom March 1976) and quite like the look of the nixie tubes - I just need to confirm that the different buttons are wired to the original design and get it working properly and then add a multiway switch and some labels that should have been included when it was originally made.

Here is a photo of it powered up showing the nice orange glow from the nixie tubes:

  • I'm about 2/3 way through Naruto Shippuden Relaxed

A️nime is my main special interest

  • Naruto Shippuden (Anime) - Can't explain it, never felt this level of joy when watching something.

Gundam model kits - I find being hyper focused on constructing these model kits quiets my mind.

Pokemon - Games, cards and anime.

Dinosaurs (Since a baby XD )

    Films

My Cat Smiley - We adopted her in 2020 and she's given me a better quality of life.

I used to feel ashamed of my interests pre diagnoses, as i felt like what brought me joy would be childish to others (Yes, someone in work found out I was listening to a dinosaur podcast and took the p%$** out of me). But now I embrace it.

  • Oh wow sounds cool!! I started getting back into maths again as well and it is so satisfying! My main special interest has been neurobiology (brain development and brain tumours mainly) but that’s also been my work/ studies and I have been quite burned out recently… Hiking used to be another one but sadly injuries have put that on pause for past years- I loved hiking especially in Corsica- GR20 was one of the best times of my life. I love mountain lakes too

  • I haven't played cluedo before, is it any good?

  • Ah  thanks!  Yeah we play scrabble quite a lot at home as well. We played a lot of scrabble during the COVID Pandemic as well.

  • Oh you have some cool ones there! I love board games, especially Scrabble.

  • Oh scuba diving, I really wish I had the money; but I'd do it on lakes only, I think.

  • LEGO

    Star Wars

    LEGO Star Wars

Collecting old maps (including old tube maps)

Reading books e.g. scifi and fantasy, or books about politics

Cycling - I have a couple of good routes I do, I cycle further than I used to (I'm trying to gradually build up my stamina over time)

Board games - Scrabble is a personal favourite of mine. I play 2-3 times a week with family or friends.  Once a month in my workplace I host board games night and it's really fun!

Reading entire wikipedia articles about random stuff

  • Wolves. Just really intrested in them. Have a pack of Wolf plushies, posters, T-shirts ect. I like movies and games with wolves in them. And lucky that I live near a zoo that has grey wolves.

Favourite game is The Wolf online simulator.

Toys, vintage ones in particular. I collect model kits, military diecasts, rc cars and tanks ect.  I Like finding broken ones and repairing them.  It is very rewarding.

Anime / manga. Always had a soft spot for it. Shows like Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball introduced me into the world of anime. I love the character designs, music storytelling ect. It also got me intrested in Japan and its culture.

I have more intrests but want to keep it short as I’ll be here forever!

  • You know, now you’ve said that I can relate to that also. I have a rather narrow choice of foods and none of them that healthy.

  • I think the difference between autistic interests and ADHD interests is the level of rigidity in those interests. I don’t like new things and feels as if I’ve already discovered or narrowed down what matters to me and what may as well be watching paint dry.

  • 1.for me its dinosaurs and anything dinosaur related. Hundreds of stuffys,  a dinosaur living room, hundreds of books about them and any new movie which has a dinosaur.

    2. Movies, the regular trip to the omniplex cinema with unlimited cinema pass ( always with my partner as cannot leave home alone due to severe depression and anxiety )  when im not watching a movie at cinema im always looking out for new movies to watch on streaming services. My most favourite is horror.

3.singing - watching singing competitions and attending choir every monday night with partner.

    4. Playing the sims on ps3 which is a daily thing of mine while partner works. I can turn it on and not notice the time for at least 3 hours  Laughing

  • I love films and musicals. eg: Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts, The Sound of Music, Phantom of The Opera, music of nearly all types, Royalty, pop culture, writing stuff down, documenting random stuff, doodling, crying, buying blankets, eating the same foods over and over and bread...just bread. The film/ musicals I mentioned are my most favourite but I like others too. I specifically like specific characters within those fandoms and have spent numerous hours reading and writing fanfics about it (some more than others) I love reading about people (real people) like I recently found out that a guy from Harry Potter used to be married to someone from Doctor Who and found that shocking that I never knew they were a thing. I love the aesthetic of royalty and I just love the actually royals in the UK and overseas. I have kept a diary since I was around 10 or 11 and have wrote it in very frequently since then. I have never know another person who has wrote stuff almost daily for as long as me. I love cookies and I love bread those are my die hard things that i need every day. I somehow am not fat and sometimes I really wonder how I'm not. Anyway sorry for writing so much,
