What to take to university?

I'm pretty sure I can move into my dorm on Saturday... but I've basically done nothing useful to get ready for college in any way.

I googled what to bring a few months ago and different sites had different answers and it was kind of a lot. So I'm wondering what you all think is good to have (if you went to uni or if you didn't I guess just what you imagine would be good)? ...Ill of course not use as a direct checklist but just for an idea

Mostly I'm just trying to seem like I'm doing something worthy of my time instead of how I spent hours writing a fanfic (a kinda disturbing one and now I sorta "traumatized" myself heh) even though I have a book to read and essay to write before a week is done and I haven't even figured out payment but yeah.

Edit: I think this is the shortest post I've ever done (or one of shortest)

  • I'm not sure where your based as you've called it university and college. Uni makes me think UK. I'd imagine it varies by location. If you are UK I know that each university varies. It very much depends on your uni accomodation and whether or not you are self catering, have communal spaces etc.

Obviously you need your basics - clothes, toiletries etc. Clothes hangers was one I discovered I needed - they were not provided. A bag for carrying your washing. Washing machines are often in a separate building or part of the building so a good bag for carrying it is very helpful. On that note you will also need whatever washing powder etc you use. You may also want some kind of cleaning supplies - cleaners tend to clean communal areas but they won't clean your bedroom. If you're self catering you may also want items to clean your dishes with. Will you have your own shower or do you have a shower room. If the latter you will want some kind of sliders/flip flops as you will not want to walk in there bare foot.

For self catering you will usually need all your plates and dishes. Your university may have told you if they provide any pots and pans etc but even if they do you may want to have your own. Sharing a kitchen was admittedly the part I found hardest about university. Some people are good at clearing up after themselves, others are not. Think about the smaller details - oven gloves, heat proof mat (depending on whether their surfaces are heat proof or not). And of course the actual food. If you're going somewhere catered then most of that is irrelevant but you still may want snacks, drinks, mugs, glasses etc.

Again this will depend on what your university provides but bedding. I'll b honest I can't remember what I needed. I definitely took duvet covers and pillow cases but I cannot remember if they provided the duvet and pillows themselves.

All your actual uni supplies - pads of paper, folders, pens etc, any books they've asked you to get and definitely a laptop.

The big one I found I needed was a TV. Being autistic I wasn't particularly comfortable sitting in the communal area (and in our communal area the TV was still supplied by one of us - don't know if that's the norm) but I spent a lot of time in my bedroom so having entertainment in there was really important for me. A lamp for reading I also needed. So whatever you are into/enjoy as hobbies - make sure you have plenty of stuff for that so you can retreat when you need to.

And don't forget the little things like your phone charger.

Sorry that's a really long answer. I'm not always very good at just writing a list. Hope it helps though.

  • Clothes, toiletries, music, mug and tea, few pens, pad of paper, a few books, laptop, phone.

You'll need to buy other stuff. Food, stuff to wash your clothes, course books, more notebooks or paper and some way to organise it.
