Martello Towers were built in Britain roughly 200 years ago, essentially to defend the Southern and Eastern coasts from Napoleon.
103 were built in total, and 47 survive, many as listed buildings. In this area there are six.
Today I had time to briefly see four of these - two of which are now repurposed as an art gallery and as an events venue.
Strikingly, they are all very different - in size and structure - and it is estimated that up to 750,000 bricks were used in the construction of each, as the walls are up to three metres thick in places.
