Home Making

Today I made a wildlife home, hopefully a hedgehog will use it, but I don't really mind who lives there. I pulled out all my tomato plants and then the brambles and then started pruning the elder tree as the brambles were all caught up in it and thought 'what shall I do with all these twigs and branches?' So I've cut them up and piled them up in a heap behind the bin, so it's protected on 3 sides and has a tunnel of grasses and hebes to use as garden.

Not only has it made me feel better being outside and gardening, but to make a home too. Tomorrow or Tuesday I will make some green tomato ketchup from all the unripe tomatoes I picked.

  • hopefully a hedgehog will use it,

A wildlife trust gardener told me to cover mine in straw. This worked really well and a hedghog moved in, after a year. I put fresh straw outside this year and some inside for bedding, and the hog arranged this to its liking. I also bought one of those semi circular shelters to put the dried hedgehog food in - which attracts hogs to your area. Best of luck and I hope one moves in soon! It's lovely making homes for wildlife and makes you feel good as well.
