Adult Neurodiversity Psychiatrist Specialist

I'm wondering if there are any adult neurodiversity psychiatrist specialists working in the UK.

So much of what I have found on-line relates to child specialists in the area of neurodiversity.

I am concerned that I am going to consult with someone who does not understand neurodiversity with all of its intricacies and that I will not receive appropriate medication.

I have been referred to the local NHS mental health team and it feels like a lot is riding on getting a correct diagnosis and appropriate medication.

Unfortunately I have been around in loops in the mental health service and I have received incorrect diagnosis and treatment. 

They had also completely overlooked the possibility that I have autism (until I paid for a private adhd

assessment and it was flagged up as autism being a strong potential and I believe I've got some adhd overlapping traits).

I am now in my 50's so you can see where my distrust comes from.

I'm willing to pay privately for a specialist if I get no joy from my local services.  

Do such specialists exist in the UK?  Anyone used this kind of service.

  • I'm not sure I've understood correctly. What have you been referred to NHS mental health team for? Have you been diagnosed with adhd or do you mean they said "traits but don't meet the full criteria"?

    I don't meet the criteria for ADHD and the private clinician didn't feel best placed to support me.  Autism traits flagged up during the assessment.  I have CPTSD in the mix so I need a psychiatrist led assessment.  Not feeling hopeful to gain the services I need on the NHS.

    Ok I think I understand now thank you. I really understand about the distrust in nhs mental health services. I also went private. Have you looked at Psychiatry UK? They have a list of psychiatrists and some are experienced in neurodiversity and mental health. You can contact them to chat first to see if they're right for you. I'd be cautious of going back to nhs especially if you have incorrect diagnosis. From my experiences they won't look past that. Is your referral for an autism assessment?

    Yes, the adhd assessor advised an autism assessment.  It costs an absolute fortune all of this.  I will take a look at psychiatry UK. Thank you. I will attend my initial appointment next week and see if it leads to anything.  Everything seems so disjointed an absolute mine field.
