Are there others here like me?

Hey there! I was recently diagnosed with autism this year and it has been a great wave of relief for me.

Though born in the UK, I lived in the Caribbean for many years (I’m middle aged). I was raised by other family members in a very a*usive environment, as my mum and dad had their separate lives. Autism was not even a thing back in the day in the C’bean and in addition, any mention of mental health as well (I’m aware ASD is a neurological condition) was a stigma. Therefore having complications and being a bit “different” rewarded me with a lot of punishment.

i could go on and on, however, I wondered if there is anyone else here who is in this demographic. I could share more if needed.Heart

Parents
  • Not exactly the same as I'm a generation down. My mother is English born to Sri Lanken parents, and I'm mixed. She had a similar situation, her parents split after having her and had seperate families, and she was sent to Sri Lanka to live for a while with aunts for early childhood. And definitely had lots of MH issues, though it's not really been a thing that's spoken about.

So please do share either way, I know from growing up in Scotland and looking different (and sounding different with a more English accent) how important it is to hear from everyone. And on top of what I now know are my autistic issues, I didn't really stand much of a chance apart from keeping my head down and working hard.
