Hello

My name is Jess. Very late self diagnosis after a lifetime of struggle, losing all relationships and autism being suggested to me throughout my life. Incurred a brain injury 2016 which forced me to face my demons. Unfortunately this has led to people thinking I have gone through a complete personality change, not knowing this is how I felt all my life and I just can't mask it anymore. Issue is I am completely on my own now and am struggling

  • Hi Jessie1,

Firstly, you are not completely on your own, now you have found this site. The people here cover a wide range of autism experience, ages, assessment. self-assessment or even not sure.

I was only diagnosed this year and am in my 70s.  As a result, I know I have changed but am also the same person I have always been. OK, that sounds contradictory so let me use a metaphor. For 70 years I have been a flower bud with all the petals tightly wrapped and this is how everyone has seen me; then the diagnosis and the petals start to unfurl into a flower. So, I am "the same but different" and the change has taken several months to assimilate, accept and is ongoing. Self-acceptance doesn't come easy to me and I have my off days like anyone. No wonder my partner has found it difficult take onboard.

I hope you can find time to explore this site; there are a lot of supportive people with a wealth of information and experience.

    Best wishes, Oscar
